A technical scheme of High-Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (HTGR) for commercial use has been released on Wednesday at Tsinghua University, allowing China to have world's first commercial nuclear power station with HTGR.
The HTGR can conceptually have an electric power of 600,000 kilowatts.
As one of the safest reactors in the world, HTGR, independently developed by Tsinghua University, is a Generation IV reactor concept which has been recognized by the world. It has the advantages of safety, multi-function and no melting of the reactor core.
Early in 2012, a demonstration project of 200,000-kilowatt HTGR nuclear power station was started construction in Rongcheng, east China's Shangdong Province. It's reported that the station will work by the end of 2017.
The 600,000-kilowatt HTGR nuclear power station is designed to adopt six reactor modules which connect a single steam turbine, with the generating efficiency reaching 43.7%, reports People's Daily.
"The HTGR technic can replace coal and gas, which pose threats to environment, as the source of electricity generation. It has a more promising future." says Zhang Zuoyi, general designer of HTGR project.
For now, China has signed cooperation memorandum on HTGR with Saudi Arabia and Indonesia. (CRIENGLISH.com)
